Involving corporations in their roles as philanthropic institutions is an integral part of the BRTA/LRTA programs. Philanthropy plays a crucial role in dislodging complacency toward the HIV/AIDS pandemic that has become apparent in recent years. Mobilizing resources in all sectorsfrom public to privatecan fight this complacency by addressing unmet domestic and global needs, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
Specifically, grantmakers must work to:
- Deepen their understanding of HIV/AIDS issues and enhance their creativity in designing sustaining HIV/AIDS grantmaking strategies.
- View HIV/AIDS within its larger political, socioeconomic, and security contexts and integrate HIV/AIDS funding into broader philanthropic portfolios.
- Focus on marginalized, underserved communities and the community-based organizations (CBOs) that serve them.
- Target private grants to support high-quality, collaborative, and non-duplicative HIV/AIDS programs.
- Work more collaboratively with other private grantmakers, the business sector, government officials and policymakers, the United Nations, and non-governmental organizations to achieve common goals and a shared sense of purpose.
